  9. The rudder is located on the Orbiter├òs vertical stabilizer. It is used to steer the ship when flying through the Earth├òs atmosphere. The rudder controls the <a href="text">yaw</a> of the vehicle. It also functions as a speed brake, slowing down the Orbiter to a speed safe for landing.
